Material flow automation for SMT manufacturing

Material handling in SMT manufacturing connects storage, staging and production lines. allSMT considers transport orders, handover points, buffers and return routes as one coordinated process.

Suitable transport equipment

The material-flow concept defines tasks, handovers and responsibilities. Specific vehicles are then selected against these requirements.

Practical questions

Is an AGV enough to automate material flow?

A vehicle covers transportation. We also recommend defining the trigger, handover, receipt confirmation and exception process. Otherwise it remains unclear when material should move and when an order is actually complete.

How do we choose where to start material flow automation?

Record recurring routes with origin, destination, carrier, frequency and waiting time. Prioritise a clearly bounded process. The solution finder provides initial guidance; detailed configuration then requires your process data.

How large should handover buffers be?

We recommend sizing buffers against peak demand, replenishment time and the planned exception process. A fixed number without considering material calls and transport cycles would not be useful. Include empty carriers and returns.

How can urgent orders and regular replenishment be coordinated?

Urgent orders need a defined priority rule. Decisions should consider when the line needs the material, existing reservations, active transports and available handover stations. An urgent flag alone is insufficient. Test competing requests together: who may change priorities, and how will you prevent other lines from continually waiting for replenishment?

What happens if a handover station is occupied or a transport is blocked?

Define an exception workflow in advance: hold material at a designated position, notify the responsible team and resume or cancel the task in a controlled way. A vehicle movement message should not automatically count as a material handover. After manual intervention, reconcile the physical location with the digital task status. The actual workflow depends on the controller and equipment.
