Practical questions
What is included in automated material supply?
It includes coordinated storage, transport and information processes: storing materials, preparing orders, supplying the line and updating inventory. We define the automation scope for your project.
Explore this solutionDoes the entire factory need to change at once?
We recommend defining a limited initial scope: for example, one storage area and one supplied line, the associated transactions and clear acceptance criteria. We assess staged expansion against the selected systems.
Explore this solutionHow should we assess the business case for warehouse automation?
Compare current searching, picking, transport and stock-correction effort with the planned process. Include investment, integration, operation and maintenance in the same calculation. A generic payback period would not be reliable without your operating data.
Explore this solutionHow does high-mix, low-volume production change warehouse planning?
Many variants and small batches create frequent changeovers, partial quantities and returns to stock. Planning should therefore consider order changes and reels needed at the same time, alongside total inventory. We recommend comparing a typical production mix with a peak-demand scenario: which materials must be ready when, which remain on the setup trolley and which return to storage?
Explore this solutionWhat should FAT and SAT cover for a storage solution?
FAT is factory acceptance testing; SAT is site acceptance testing. Agree test cases using actual packages: putaway, picking, returns, blocked stock and inventory reconciliation. At the site, include the real interfaces, routes and handovers. An unreadable label, an occupied handover station and recovery after an interruption should also be part of the agreed test plan.
Explore this solutionCan storage systems handle trays and boxes as well as SMD reels?
Depending on the system, trays and boxes can be handled alongside reels. Dimensions, weight and handling are checked for your configuration; this does not approve every package.
Explore this solutionIs an automated warehouse automatically a dry-storage system?
No. Dehumidification is a separate equipment option. Storage conditions, monitoring and your material process must be explicitly specified for moisture-sensitive components.
Explore this solutionWhat does allSMT need to compare storage options?
Useful inputs are your reel and package mix, peak stock, retrievals per shift, available floor space and height. Include peak periods, returns and existing systems so we can compare actual requirements rather than isolated maximum capacities.
Explore this solutionWhen should we use FIFO or FEFO?
FIFO prioritises stock received first. FEFO prioritises stock with the earliest relevant expiry date. Both require reliable package or batch data. The picking rule should also respect approvals, reservations and material blocks. MSL floor life is a separate process parameter and should not be treated as equivalent to a general storage or expiry date.
Explore this solutionWhat must be recorded for MSL and component floor life?
MSL describes a component's moisture sensitivity. After opening its moisture-barrier packaging, the permitted processing time under defined environmental conditions matters. The package record should therefore include its MSL, opening time and documented storage or exposure conditions. Returning it to stock does not automatically reset floor life. Drying and subsequent release follow the component requirements and the approved handling process.
Explore this solutionIs an ESD-compatible rack enough to protect components?
ESD protection covers the complete handling route. It includes suitable packaging and load carriers, specified grounding measures, workstations and trained staff. Transfers to trolleys or vehicles must also fit the ESD control programme. We recommend reviewing the route from goods receipt to the line with your ESD coordinator and defining the evidence required for the selected equipment.
Explore this solutionIs an AGV enough to automate material flow?
A vehicle covers transportation. We also recommend defining the trigger, handover, receipt confirmation and exception process. Otherwise it remains unclear when material should move and when an order is actually complete.
Explore this solutionHow do we choose where to start material flow automation?
Record recurring routes with origin, destination, carrier, frequency and waiting time. Prioritise a clearly bounded process. The solution finder provides initial guidance; detailed configuration then requires your process data.
Explore this solutionHow large should handover buffers be?
We recommend sizing buffers against peak demand, replenishment time and the planned exception process. A fixed number without considering material calls and transport cycles would not be useful. Include empty carriers and returns.
Explore this solutionHow can urgent orders and regular replenishment be coordinated?
Urgent orders need a defined priority rule. Decisions should consider when the line needs the material, existing reservations, active transports and available handover stations. An urgent flag alone is insufficient. Test competing requests together: who may change priorities, and how will you prevent other lines from continually waiting for replenishment?
Explore this solutionWhat happens if a handover station is occupied or a transport is blocked?
Define an exception workflow in advance: hold material at a designated position, notify the responsible team and resume or cancel the task in a controlled way. A vehicle movement message should not automatically count as a material handover. After manual intervention, reconcile the physical location with the digital task status. The actual workflow depends on the controller and equipment.
Explore this solutionIs a part number enough to track individual reels?
Project planning should distinguish a part from each individual package. We recommend a unique package ID linked to part, lot, quantity and location. Also define how partial quantities, replacement labels and returns are handled.
Explore this solutionDoes a warehouse transaction prove use on a particular PCB assembly?
A warehouse transaction initially describes material movement. Evidence down to an assembly also requires a defined link within production. Clarify capture points, data transfers and the required traceability scope.
Explore this solutionHow should we handle discrepancies in remaining quantities?
Define a controlled return process: identify the reel, verify the remainder, approve discrepancies and update inventory. A counting station is one possible component. The agreed handling of differences is essential.
Explore this solutionHow does a rewound or split reel remain traceable?
After a split, each new package needs its own unique ID. Preserve its relationship to the original reel and batch. Record the split quantities, time and responsible process step, and reconcile the quantities against the original reel. Copying the same old label onto both partial reels creates an ambiguous identity and makes later tracing difficult.
Explore this solutionHow are blocked batches kept out of production?
A block should affect the relevant reservation and picking processes as well as appear on screen. Define which system owns the block and how WMS and production receive it. Also check reels already picked and material already at the line. Release should require an authorised person, a recorded reason and a traceable status change.
Explore this solutionWhich reel formats does an SMD tower support?
The system family considered supports 7- and 13-inch reels, with 15 inches optional. We confirm widths, mixed loading and approval for the specific model against your packages.
Explore this solutionHow many reels fit in an SMD tower?
A reliable capacity requires the actual reel mix. Provide diameters, widths, stock and reserve requirements. We recommend evaluating capacity and access under the same loading conditions. The project defines the specific configuration and installation footprint.
Explore this solutionCan the tower connect to ERP, MES and AGVs?
ERP/MES connectivity and AGV handover are possible depending on the configuration. Interfaces, handover mechanics and responsibilities are checked for your installation.
Explore this solutionIs retrieval time the same as delivery time to the SMT line?
These times need to be considered separately. Beyond retrieval, include queueing, kitting, handover and transport. Define whether a target concerns a single reel, a complete job or arrival at the production line.
Explore this solutionWhen should I compare a tower with a reel rack?
Compare both when space, access frequency or operator effort drives the decision. Include frequent product changes and returns. An assessment using your actual reels is more useful than comparing maximum slot counts.
Explore this solutionWhen is batch retrieval useful compared with single-reel access?
Batch retrieval can suit orders that need several reels prepared together. Single-reel access is relevant for targeted replenishment. Compare order size, sequencing, buffers and the handover concept. A short access time per reel does not tell you when a complete material kit will be ready. Assess both workflows with your reel mix and realistic requests.
Explore this solutionWhat should be defined for tower maintenance and restart?
Before selection, clarify maintenance access, service space and how the line will be supplied during an interruption. Do not assume every reel can be accessed manually; the approved equipment design determines this. Restart should include reconciling open tasks and confirming material positions. Size any buffer against your recovery and replenishment requirements.
Explore this solutionIs a sensor-assisted reel rack fully automated?
In a sensor-assisted reel rack, an operator places and retrieves reels. Sensors support occupancy detection. Automated mechanical loading and retrieval require a different system concept.
Explore this solutionHow does pick-to-light work for SMD reels?
A scan identifies the material. Light indicators guide the operator to the assigned location; reels are moved manually. The confirmation workflow is aligned with your software.
Explore this solutionCan a reel rack accommodate different reel widths?
Adjustable slot widths are possible depending on the rack variant. A varied reel mix changes usable occupancy. Provide actual diameters and widths before capacity is agreed.
Explore this solutionWhat should be defined for returning partially used reels?
Define who identifies the reel, how remaining quantities are verified and when the new location is recorded. Include damaged labels, blocked material and uncertain quantities. These exceptions belong in the return process.
Explore this solutionHow can we evaluate reel storage before expanding it?
We recommend a representative test with your reels and typical jobs. Check put-away, retrieval, operator errors and returns. Agree measurable criteria for searching effort and inventory reconciliation before including more areas.
Explore this solutionDoes an occupancy sensor identify the reel in a slot?
Occupancy and identity are different information. A sensor can report an occupied slot; the reel's identity comes from the specified identification and assignment process, such as a scan. Practical tests should therefore include swapped reels, unconfirmed removals and incorrectly read labels. What matters is how the selected solution detects these discrepancies and flags them for resolution.
Explore this solutionHow can ongoing inventory checks be organised in a reel store?
Cycle counting checks a limited area at a time. Distinguish the storage position, package ID and actual component quantity: an occupied slot does not confirm the remaining quantity. Account for ongoing putaway and retrieval or pause them for the affected scope. Investigate discrepancies with a clear record before approving a correction in the inventory-owning system.
Explore this solutionWhich transport tasks can AGVs perform?
AGVs can transport material between storage, buffers and production. Loads, navigation and handovers depend on the vehicle and attachment. Configuration follows your transport tasks.
Explore this solutionWhat information is needed for an AGV concept?
Provide the layout, transport connections, carrier dimensions, weights and peak demand. Add existing handover heights and operational constraints. These inputs guide vehicle selection and the required integration scope.
Explore this solutionCan an AGV be integrated into an existing factory?
We review routes, stations and control interfaces in your existing factory. The specific vehicle and handover concept determines whether existing machines need modifications.
Explore this solutionHow many vehicles do I need?
We recommend sizing against peak transport demand rather than daily averages alone. Include travel, waiting, handover and charging times. Fleet size should be defined after reviewing those processes.
Explore this solutionWho confirms the material handover?
This is agreed between vehicle control, station and supervisory system. Define how material links to its order and how missing confirmations are handled. Include a test of the complete handover chain in acceptance criteria.
Explore this solutionWhat does VDA 5050 mean for integrating a vehicle fleet?
VDA 5050 describes the communication of order and status data between a central fleet control system and mobile robots. Both sides must support a compatible version and the required functions. The interface label alone confirms neither a suitable load handover nor complete integration. We recommend testing your travel, transfer and error scenarios before acceptance.
Explore this solutionHow is vehicle charging included in material-flow planning?
Fleet sizing must include charging time and available charging points. Review each shift's journeys, waiting periods and demand peaks: when can a vehicle charge without delaying an urgent delivery? Charging methods and reserves depend on the vehicle, battery and application. Assess the fleet against a complete operating cycle, rather than travel time alone.
Explore this solutionWhich building blocks support SMT line supply?
The SMT solution connects material storage, AGV distribution and information exchange with existing factory systems. allSMT helps define which handovers and data flows your production process requires.
Explore this solutionWhat is the difference between kitting and replenishment?
For project planning, we distinguish preparing a material set for a job from supplying it during production. Specify quantities, destinations and deadlines for each. This allows priorities and buffers to be defined clearly.
Explore this solutionWhat triggers an automatic material request?
The trigger is defined during the project, such as a released job or a defined replenishment need. Essential inputs are a reliable data source, the remaining response time and unambiguous confirmation of demand.
Explore this solutionHow should remaining material be handled after a job?
Plan the return route alongside supply: identification, quantity verification, release status and destination. Also define what stays at the line. This gives each material state a clear next process.
Explore this solutionHow should we test line supply before acceptance?
Agree tests for normal operation, product changes, concurrent requests and interrupted handovers. Measure from demand to confirmed availability. Acceptance criteria should also cover returns and missing or blocked reels.
Explore this solutionHow are approved alternative components handled during picking?
Alternative components should come from an approved mapping for the product and order. An identical package shape or similar item name is not approval. Define which system selects the alternative and how setup verification and traceability receive that decision. Pay particular attention to partial substitution within an order and later changes to material approval.
Explore this solutionDoes delivering a reel to the line verify the setup?
Material delivery initially confirms transport. Setup verification also needs to check the reel, feeder, machine position and approved setup programme. Depending on the equipment concept, machine or manufacturing software handles this task. Describe handover and setup verification separately, then test their data exchange, including a reel or feeder change.
Explore this solutionWhich software modules are needed?
Depending on the process, warehouse management, material management, equipment control and robot coordination are combined. Required modules, interfaces and licences are defined against your existing IT.
Explore this solutionIs existing SMT equipment automatically compatible?
No. Connectivity must be checked for the model, software version and available interface. We need the specific equipment configuration and interface documentation for the assessment.
Explore this solutionWhich system owns inventory: ERP or WMS?
Ownership must be defined clearly in your integration concept. We recommend assigning master data, physical stock, reservations and corrections separately. Also specify transfer direction and behaviour when transactions are delayed or fail.
Explore this solutionWhich interfaces and data formats are required?
The general product page does not replace an interface specification. Document available protocols, data fields, access rights, events and error codes before planning. Specific API, ERP or machine connections are confirmed against that documentation.
Explore this solutionWhat should an integration test cover?
We recommend testing a complete material journey: receipt, storage, reservation, retrieval, line handover and return. Add duplicate messages, connection interruptions and stock corrections. Reconciliation of physical material and system state should be part of acceptance.
Explore this solutionHow can duplicate postings be prevented when messages are resent?
Agree a unique transaction identifier for messages that change inventory. Resending the same transaction must not change stock again. Also define acknowledgements, retries and the order of related events. An important test is a connection failure after a successful posting but before its acknowledgement: the retry must be handled without a second inventory change.
Explore this solutionWhat roles do IPC-CFX and Hermes play in SMT integration?
IPC-CFX supports manufacturing-data exchange between equipment and higher-level systems. Hermes focuses on board flow and associated data between machines. The standards complement each other but serve different purposes. For material-logistics integration, check the messages, versions and functions actually available. Supporting a standard does not replace an agreed mapping of package, order and inventory data.
Explore this solutionWhich data and workflows matter when recovering from an IT outage?
Recovery needs locations, inventory, open orders and unacknowledged movements as well as master data. Define which actions are permitted while disconnected and how they will later be reconciled. A backup alone does not demonstrate operational recovery. Agree a restore test that includes user roles, permissions and reconciliation against the material physically present.
Explore this solutionWhat distinguishes inline and lineside component counting?
Inline counting is integrated into a material flow, with trolley or AGV loading possible depending on the configuration. A lineside station is supplied as needed. The key factors are feeding, handover and integration into your workflow.
Explore this solutionCan trays and packaged components also be counted?
Depending on the counting system, JEDEC trays and moisture-protective packaging may be suitable alongside reels. We recommend sample tests using your actual components and packaging before confirming suitability.
Explore this solutionHow do counting results reach inventory management?
Depending on the system, counting results and images can be stored and transferred to ERP, MES or WMS. The project defines how a result links to a package ID, is checked and becomes a stock update.
Explore this solutionWhat counting accuracy and cycle time should I expect?
Binding targets should be tested against an agreed sample set. Include component types, packaging, exceptions and loading/unloading. Also define how counting errors are detected and resolved. A single headline value does not replace application testing.
Explore this solutionWhere should counting checks be considered?
Consider incoming goods, returns from production and unexplained stock differences. Define when counting is required and when an existing quantity can be accepted. This makes counting part of a traceable transaction process.
Explore this solutionHow are reported consumption and measured remaining quantity reconciled?
First align the package ID and reference time. An earlier count cannot be compared directly with stock after further withdrawals. Check pending postings, rejects, setup consumption and possible material splits. Counting provides a measurement; assessing and approving a difference belongs in the agreed correction workflow. This keeps both the measurement and inventory adjustment traceable.
Explore this solutionHow do we assess the repeatability of component counting?
Use representative packages with a reliably known reference quantity and repeat measurements under agreed conditions. Record deviations, packaging and positioning. Consistent results demonstrate repeatability but do not automatically demonstrate correctness: a systematic error can repeat too. Include both reference comparison and repeated measurements in the suitability test for your component mix.
Explore this solutionWhat should be checked for splices, empty pockets and unusual packaging?
Include these samples explicitly in the suitability test. Agree which features the specific counting system recognises, when a result is considered uncertain and how it is rechecked. Include labels, overlapping structures and different component geometries in the sample set. General approval for a reel diameter does not confirm suitability for every component and packaging combination.
Explore this solutionDoes X-ray counting also confirm component quality?
A counting result determines quantity. It does not automatically confirm electrical function, solderability or material approval. Those assessments require their own specified inspection methods. Keep counting status and quality status as separate information in inventory management. A correctly counted reel can still be blocked and should not be released for an order solely because it has been counted.
