Integrating X-ray component counting into material processes

X-ray component counting determines SMD package quantities through image analysis. Selection depends on material suitability, the inspection workflow and matching results to the correct package.

When does it make sense?

For inventory reconciliation, material returns and stocktaking when remaining quantities must be linked to material identity.

How the process works

Material is identified, counted and the result assigned to its reel. Inline and offline processes are evaluated against existing material movements.

Configuration follows your application.

Integration & prerequisites

Provide the reel and component range. Define counting method, verification samples and transfer to inventory management.

Limits & dependencies

Counting accuracy and throughput depend on the selected system and material. Firm values require assessment of the specific application.

From counting strategy to equipment

The counting system is selected from the material range, process position, required automation and data exchange.

Practical questions

What distinguishes inline and lineside component counting?

Inline counting is integrated into a material flow, with trolley or AGV loading possible depending on the configuration. A lineside station is supplied as needed. The key factors are feeding, handover and integration into your workflow.

Can trays and packaged components also be counted?

Depending on the counting system, JEDEC trays and moisture-protective packaging may be suitable alongside reels. We recommend sample tests using your actual components and packaging before confirming suitability.

How do counting results reach inventory management?

Depending on the system, counting results and images can be stored and transferred to ERP, MES or WMS. The project defines how a result links to a package ID, is checked and becomes a stock update.

What counting accuracy and cycle time should I expect?

Binding targets should be tested against an agreed sample set. Include component types, packaging, exceptions and loading/unloading. Also define how counting errors are detected and resolved. A single headline value does not replace application testing.

Where should counting checks be considered?

Consider incoming goods, returns from production and unexplained stock differences. Define when counting is required and when an existing quantity can be accepted. This makes counting part of a traceable transaction process.

How are reported consumption and measured remaining quantity reconciled?

First align the package ID and reference time. An earlier count cannot be compared directly with stock after further withdrawals. Check pending postings, rejects, setup consumption and possible material splits. Counting provides a measurement; assessing and approving a difference belongs in the agreed correction workflow. This keeps both the measurement and inventory adjustment traceable.

How do we assess the repeatability of component counting?

Use representative packages with a reliably known reference quantity and repeat measurements under agreed conditions. Record deviations, packaging and positioning. Consistent results demonstrate repeatability but do not automatically demonstrate correctness: a systematic error can repeat too. Include both reference comparison and repeated measurements in the suitability test for your component mix.

What should be checked for splices, empty pockets and unusual packaging?

Include these samples explicitly in the suitability test. Agree which features the specific counting system recognises, when a result is considered uncertain and how it is rechecked. Include labels, overlapping structures and different component geometries in the sample set. General approval for a reel diameter does not confirm suitability for every component and packaging combination.

Does X-ray counting also confirm component quality?

A counting result determines quantity. It does not automatically confirm electrical function, solderability or material approval. Those assessments require their own specified inspection methods. Keep counting status and quality status as separate information in inventory management. A correctly counted reel can still be blocked and should not be released for an order solely because it has been counted.
